Wild Activities:

Below is an outline of the various development activities offered by Bornwild. Team Players have the benefit to concentrate on a specific activity or to be involved in a combination of activities. Guidelines will be offered to you by e-mail on request as well as local staff to assist during your stay. Team Players will be encouraged to use their initiative and personal style in contributing.

Team Players:

Bornwild believes that the most valuable contribution to communities and the environment is your own personal initiative and your unique individual ability to make a difference.

Bornwild believes that change and development is based on people contributing together as a Team. It is also important that the Team works towards their goals in an enthusiastic and enjoyable manner. Only through teamwork is a positive result rewarded.

For these reasons Bornwild refers to its clients as Team Players, working together to bring about change through a "Rewarding" and satisfying mutual experience.

Wild Agriculture:

Goals:

  • Develop improved and sustainable agricultural practices in order to relieve hunger and environmental degradation
  • Introduce income generating activities (IGA's)

Activities:

  • Building and development of model agricultural plots for training and education within communities
  • Building of basic and cost effective irrigation methods
  • Education on the principles of crop diversification including vegetable production, fruit production, livestock and fish production
  • Introducing the principles of organic farming and perma-culture

Outline of Agriculture Practices: A Team Player will work with a community on a plot that demonstrates a variety of improved agricultural practices. This may involve, physical activities, digging, preparing areas for planting vegetables, fruit and other crops, preparing nurseries for seedlings, designing and digging irrigation systems, and preparing compost. Team Players will also be involved in training and educating communities in various agricultural principles through classroom style presentations. A combination of manual work and community interaction can be expected.

Qualification: No specific qualifications are needed for these activities. A background in agriculture, organic farming or simple gardening will be useful.

Wild Health:

Goals:

  • Improving the available health services and health conditions of the general population

Specialist activities: Nurses, Doctors, Physio-therapists, Radiographers, Dentists, Orthopaedics, Opticians, Nutritionists, Gynaecologists.

Qualifications: Medics interested in specialised medical work will be required to present recognised medical qualifications. Specialist medical Team Players will be screened by the hospital and the relevant hospital will be responsible for approval. Hospital approval is not guaranteed and is not the responsibility of Bornwild.

Outline of Health Specialists: Team Specialists will be involved in daily activities of the hospital in accordance with the routines and needs of the hospital.

Hospital Activities:

  • Landscaping
  • Painting
  • Electrical (Qualifications required)
  • Carpentry (Qualifications required)
  • Mechanics (Qualifications required)
  • Administration
  • Catering
  • General hospital maintenance and cleaning

Health Outreach and Education Activities:

  • HIV awareness, education and counselling
  • Home Base Care for AIDS victims
  • Malaria education and awareness
  • General health education in basic health and hygiene

Outline of Health Outreach: Team Players will spend time either at the hospital or going out into villages and communities to educate the population in matters of HIV and Malaria prevention. These programmes will be essentially educational with very little hands on practical work. No qualification is required for these education activities and Team Players will themselves receive training at the hospital before going out into communities.

Qualifications: No qualifications are needed for the general hospital work of hospital maintenance and outreach other than where qualifications have been specified above.

Wild Orphanages:

Wildlife Lessons

Goals:

  • To provide children with the care, life skills and education needed to enjoy a happy and prosperous future
  • Positive healthy living
  • Creating opportunities within the community
  • Self sustainability

Activities:

  • Youth work, Teaching life skills, leadership skills and social responsibility
  • Basic education in subjects such as literacy and arithmetic
  • Education in basic health and hygiene as well as AIDS awareness
  • Sports coaching in games such as soccer, netball, volleyball
  • Education in matters of environmental responsibility and improved agricultural practices
  • Education in basic business skills and financial responsibility
  • Entertainment through theatre, dance and music and development of creative skills
  • Teaching visual arts and craft skills to children
  • Training of local social workers and volunteers with skills to provide ongoing improvements
  • Ophanages range from newborns to 18 year olds

Outline of Orphanage Activity: Team Players involvement in orphan care centre is very broad, general and flexible. It will include mostly activities relating to education. A daily routine may start with education in subjects such as maths and literacy followed by basic games and life skills training. Afternoons could involve sports coaching, agricultural and environmental training. Team Players will be expected to use their own initiative for most of the activities. Local staff will be on hand for guidance and assistance.

Qualifications: No specific qualifications are required for general orphan activities. The only requirement is common sense and the desire to make a difference.

Wild Environment:

Wildlife Lessons

Goals:

  • Educating communities on the importance of environmental conservation and developing simple practical and effective programmes for community participation. The objective is to restore and protect the natural environment

Activities:

  • Education on the importance of environmental conservation. (Classroom style presentations.)
  • Establishment of Wild Life Clubs.
  • Tree planting projects
  • Developing wild animal appreciation and building animal sanctuaries
  • Anti poaching programmes
  • Establishing Eco-tourism projects in the community as a means of income generating for the community

Outline of Environment Work: Team Players will work with the communities to educate and motivate members to participate in change. Assist in tree planting programmes by preparing tree nurseries, planting seedlings, digging and preparing holes for tree planting. Engage with anti poaching education and join anti poaching expeditions to find and destroy traps. Accompany members of the community on wildlife appreciation expeditions.

Qualifications: No specific qualifications are required, a background in environmental studies or an interest in nature and conservation is beneficial.

Wild Sport:

Goals:

  • Providing communities with positive and healthy forms of recreation
  • Using sport as a medium for teaching principles and life skills such as leadership and team work
  • Using community participation at sporting events to encourage community involvement in other areas of development
  • Identifying talented players as potential professionals

Activities:

  • Basic sports skills such as catching and throwing
  • Basic hand eye co-ordination.
  • Soccer Training (Soccer Clinics)
  • Netball Training
  • Volley ball training
  • General games and sports of your own interest.(Of course safety and common sense is essential)
  • Promotion of the benefits of exercise and fitness for healthy living
  • Establishment of leagues and sporting administration structures
  • Training of local coaching staff in various sporting disciplines to provide ongoing improvements

Outline of Sports Training: Team Players will work with various sectors of the community (from children to adults) in developing their sporting abilities. Team Players will design and set sporting programs and training methods, assist in the establishment of teams and league structures. Most sporting activities will take place in the afternoon and on weekends.

Qualification: No specific qualifications are required. A moderate ability and skill level will be required for your chosen sports. You will find appropriate members within the community to benefit from your individual skill levels no matter what your own level.

Wild Business:

Wildlife Lessons

Goals:

  • Educate communities in various principles and opportunities for their own wealth creation
  • Help communities or individuals establish practical and sustainable income generating activities
  • Motivate communities and individuals to believe that wealth creation is possible and that they have the power to change their financial situation

Activities:

  • Educating in the principles of personal financial responsibility.
  • Education in basic concepts of book keeping
  • Assisting in the design of basic Business Plans
  • Working along side already established businesses and assisting in improvements such as sales and marketing, stock controls, control systems and other business concepts
  • Working together with individuals to help them to start and establish their own business

Outline of Business Strategies: Team Players will work in various sections of the community assisting them to understand and practice the principles of personal wealth creation. It will include teaching children and adults, the principles of personal finance. Team Players will be introduced to business people in the community and spend time guiding them to enhance and grow their business. Alternatively you could work with someone who has a business idea and needs to develop it. We recommend as much daily practical involvement in the business as possible. Your goal will be to take one community business (or more if you choose) and to be sure that by the time you leave, the business has developed. You are not expected to offer capital to the business but rather education, training and advice. If you choose to support the business financially that is your prerogative, finance will need to be your own. Bornwild does not finance businesses.

Qualifications: No specific qualifications are needed to be part of Wild Business. A business background will be helpful. Your financial intelligence will be a major contribution to personal financial responsibility and humble businesses.

Wild Schools:

Goals:

  • To contribute positively and effectively to the education and development of children in schools.
  • Build a new generation of motivated and self empowered individuals to bring about change in the future.
  • Personal Change
  • Design and plan for future living
  • Accepting personal responsibility

Activities:

  • Assist in both primary and secondary schools (including pre-school activities)
  • Provide children with extra lessons in various school subjects. (Maths, English, Science, Biology, Geography and Health being the main ones)
  • Offer alternative and interesting subjects in schools.
  • Assist teachers in daily classes
  • Sports coaching in the schools (SEE SPORTS ACTIVITIES)
  • Participate in the wildlife clubs
  • Teach drama, music and dance to the school children
  • Teach Art
  • School ground maintenance and landscaping
  • School tree planting programmes
  • AIDS awareness and life skills training within schools

Outline of School Activities: Team Players will have the opportunity to work in both primary and secondary schools. You will have the opportunity to participate and assist in teaching in classes depending on school schedules and programmes. Your teaching activities and involvement will be in alignment with where the class is in the syllabus. There will also be plenty of scope for extra classes in the afternoons as well as offering classes on new and interesting subjects. There are numerous extra mural activities you could teach including sport, drama, music, wildlife, art and life skills such as leadership.

Qualifications: No specific teaching qualifications are required, a pass in secondary school subjects will be required. For example to teach secondary school maths you should have at least passed your own school secondary or university requirements. A background in teaching will be beneficial.

Wild Culture:

Goals:

  • To help communities realise the wealth of their culture and to promote cultural exchange.

Activities:

  • Visiting rural communities and villages to experience and participate in daily activities.
  • Learning traditional Malawian dances and drumming
  • Using drama and music as a medium for presenting messages of change and development.
  • Teaching drama and dance as a means of generating income through providing entertainment.
  • Teaching the art of street theatre in music, drama, dance, juggling and clowning
  • Teaching visual arts and crafts such as drawing, painting and sculpture.

Outline of Culture Activities: Team Players will gain the opportunity to see and experience much of what traditional Malawian culture entails. You will be encouraged to learn as much about Malawi culture. Malawians are extremely talented performers, with an abundance of enthusiasm to dance, sing and act. Encouragement and training in these areas will be very well received. African culture is rooted in story telling and dance, as a Team Player you will be encouraged to absorb the culture and identify ways to keep the culture alive and growing. Your appreciation and enjoyment of Malawian culture will contribute towards a sense of self worth and pride which is vital to all forms of development.

Qualifications: No specific qualifications are required to be part of Wild Culture. Drama skills and music skills will certainly be of value in teaching and developing individuals and groups as performers. However, the most important requirement is simply a respect and appreciation for culture.
